Healthy Mouth Cleaning

Routine dental cleanings (prophylaxis) are important to maintaining good oral hygiene. A professional cleaning by our hygienist can remove mineralized plaque that may develop even with thorough brushing and flossing, particularly in areas that are difficult to reach. It is recommended you go in for a cleaning at least once every six months. Insurance will usually cover cleanings twice a year at 100% as part of preventative maintenance. How it's done

You can expect your dental cleaning to last between 30 minutes and an hour. Typically, a trained hygienist will do the cleaning, and a dentist may come in for an exam at the end. Most people find that dental cleanings are painless, and do not cause any discomfort.

During the appointment, your hygienist will remove the plaque and tartar from the tooth surfaces near the gumline and in between your teeth. This can be performed with hand instruments, ultrasonic tips or a combination of both depending on the amount of tarter to remove.

In adults, polishing is done towards the end to remove any final plaque and buff the teeth. In children, polishing may be done at the beginning since baby teeth do not build much hard tarter, but instead accumulate plaque. The polishing paste used contains a course pumice similar to your toothpaste and can contain fluoride.
