Deep Cleaning (SRP)
When your hygienist does a deep cleaning she is taking the bacteria off of the root of your tooth and is also cleaning the inside of the gum area that touches the root. The clinical term is called scaling and planing. Think of smoothing the surface. By cleaning both of these areas and letting them heal tightly back together, the pockets are reduced and your tooth can get back to being healthy as long as you do your part brushing and flossing at home. If the pockets measured are deep, typically 5mm and above, the hygienist may recommend a site specific antibiotic called Arestin. It is not a pill you take, but a powder that goes directly into the gum pocket and helps to kill stubborn bacteria. After the deep cleaning, a prescription strength mouthwash called Peridex (chlorhexidine) is usually prescribed for 1-2 weeks to help kill bacteria while you heal.
Deep cleanings are usually done in 2 visits with your hygienist, usually one side of your mouth and then the other within 2-3 weeks of each other is ideal. To make your appointment more comfortable, we can numb you with a topical gel called Oraqix or completely numb you with lidocaine. Preference is usually discussed prior to starting the treatment.
Scaling and Root Planning is charged by your dental office in quadrants, (upper right, lower right, upper left, lower left). Costs could range from $180-$300 per quadrant plus Arestin. Your dental insurance company will usually help out by paying 50%- 80% of the fee once your deductible has been met. After your scaling, your hygienist will bring you back every 3-4 months for a maintenance appointment called Periodontal Maintenance. Gum disease didn’t happen overnight and stopping it doesn’t either. The True Dental team will help you get on track and stay on track towards a happy and healthy mouth.
